I was introduced to del.icio.us by a good friend of mine ; ) , which I now frequently use to bookmark sites I may visit in the future/pages deserve to look at again/pages I need to look at when I get back home from work! Most importantly, I am able to share links with my friend and recommend links to them....and I can access it from any computers I like!
(You may argue that Google sync allow you to do the same thing! But you can't share links with your friends or found out which site is the most popular by view at the moment...which is the fun part of it all!!!)
At first I didn't think it would be so useful, but the more I use it, the more it becomes a necessity for me! : ) It just make things easier to collaborate in one central location.
Back to the Firefox add-ons:
Anyway, getting back to the main point! : ) At the moment, once you have set up your del.icio.us account, you are able to add 2 bookmarks to the 'bookmark bars' in firefox. With one allowing you to see your del.icio.us bookmarks. The other allowing you to post the website you are currently viewing into del.icio.us.
The annoying thing about this is that as your 'bookmarks' grow e.g. when you add in work related bookmarks, or as you don't use the bookmarks bar often e.g. you will only ever have the 2 del.icio.us bookmarks in your bookmarks bar, you'll probabaly wanna get it out of the way. So my (same) good friend of mine introduced me to this del.icio.us firefox add-ons:
Add-on name: del.icio.us By: del.icio.us
which will add the 2 bookmarks as 2 new buttons in the navigation bar!!!
But TODAY...as I tried to do the same thing on my work computer....I happened to installed the 'wrong' thing (as I didn't remember the name of the add-ons, I just did a Google search)!!! Anyway I installed this:
Add-on name: del.icio.us Bookmarks By: Yahoo! Inc
which was just BAD (personal feeling here)!!! It mucked up my existing Firefox bookmarks!!! ><" You see what it does is that it NOT ONLY add on the 2 navigation buttons for you....but....it also replaces your default Firefox bookmarking functionality and tries to install a new 'system' that sync your Firefox bookmarks with your del.icio.us ones (which I did not want to happen as I don't want to post the hundreds of temporary bookmarks I have on my Firefox bookmarks to my del.icio.us bookmarks)! What's more is that after I click on the 'don't sync', all my Firefox bookmarks disappear from the 'new bookmarking interface'!!! 0_0 (shock horror!!!!) Instead you get a new system in the bookmarks bar that only display 'tags' of bookmarks (I was lost myself)!!! The only good thing about this is that after I 'uninstall' it, it was able to restore my Firefox bookmarks...PHEW!!!! : )
Conclusions:
If you want to add del.icio.us navigation buttons to your Firefox browser AND want to keep your existing Firefox 'bookmarking functionality'....then make sure you get the right add-ons! : )
